The names Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steels refer to their two-phase microstructure, which is composed of stainless steel grains that are 50% austenitic and 50% ferritic. This type of steel has a number of advantages and is frequently preferred over conventional ferritic or austenitic stainless steels due to its increased strength – it is roughly twice as strong as these metals. Due to duplex stainless steels’ increased yield strength, thinner sections can be created, resulting in significant weight savings.
